I've always loved the Historic Environment, the 'Sense of Place', long before we knew that term could be defined. My CV looks like it should have been planned, but it wasn’t, opportunities came along at the right time, and these took me to English Heritage (three times now!) The National Lottery Heritage Fund (HLF as it was then) The North of England Civic Trust, The Science Museum Group and into the private sector with Turner & Townsend, Summers Inman and Steel River Consultants.
I bring my background as a Conservation driven Project Manager developing projects from concept through to delivery, across many different types of projects from construction and conservation repair, through to community and volunteer engagement. I offer Project and Programme Management, working directly with clients or with other disciplines across the sector. Although my priorities have always been the Historic Environment, I have also worked on construction projects in schools, rail, manufacturing sites and in prisons!
I am a warm and engaged project professional, bringing a wealth of experience to the sector, whilst creating positive environments in order to drive projects forwards. I have a depth of experience in the public, private and third sectors, which enables me to really understand different drivers, priorities and focus for clients and other colleagues within the sector.
My passion for the cultural and historic environment is driven by my knowledge that organisations need to build a systematic approach to understanding their assets. I have over 27 years within the construction and infrastructure sectors and draw on experience and knowledge from both the public and private sector. My experience is grounded in Asset and Programme Management with an eye to strategic planning, which enables me respond to the complex problems presented by historic buildings.
This came to the fore at English Heritage, where I led a team of Surveyors and Asset Managers to develop an Asset Management Strategy. My team and I surveyed 420 sites from neolithic burial barrows, cold war bunkers to castles and former Royal residences and created a new strategy for delivery. This enabled English Heritage, for the first time, to understand their portfolio, the condition of the assets and then prioritise works required. I took a similar approach at the Science Museum Group, which focused on a very different portfolio of buildings.
I draw on my experience as a Programme Manager and Asset Manager to deliver commissions which are embedded in a technical understanding of the asset, whilst focussing on clients’ needs and requirements. I have managed and been responsible for developing funding bids and strategies to help drive economic, social and environmental benefits, whilst also building and managing teams to deliver multi-million-pound programmes of works across a museum portfolio.
